Starting your first resume from a blank page

Instead of writing down everything at once, start with the experience the role you are applying for actually needs.

Decide on the role first

Read the job posting and note the tasks and skills that keep coming up, then connect them to experience you can talk about. If you have little work experience, roles you took on in classes, clubs or personal projects are a good starting point. Do not present things you have not done as experience.

Keep the basic information short

Start by checking your name, the role you are applying for and an email address where you can be reached. Add a phone number, location or portfolio link only as far as they are needed. Date of birth, gender, a full home address and a photo are not required fields in this service. Check the employer's own requirements separately.

Choose your experience and put it in order

Add the most relevant experience first, as blocks. Put recent experience first, and arrange things so the reader can easily find each role and its dates. For a first resume, it is fine to place education and projects above work experience.

Finish by reading it with fresh eyes

Check whether someone reading this document for the first time would understand the background of each project. Spell out internal jargon, and check typos, your email address and links yourself. Replace or delete all sample content before you submit.
