Resume photos: deciding whether to include one

A photo is not a required part of every resume. Check the employer's instructions first, and if you do include one, prepare it carefully.

Check the employer's requirements first

Many employers, including some public-sector and blind-hiring processes, do not accept photos, while others have a photo field on their own application form. In many countries resumes normally omit photos. If the posting or application form gives instructions, follow them. If there are no instructions, it is fine to leave the photo out.

If you include one, use a recent, neat photo

A front-facing photo showing your face and shoulders against a plain, light background is a safe choice. An old photo or heavy retouching can differ from how you actually look and may work against you.

Check the proportions and resolution

Resume photos commonly use a portrait, ID-photo ratio. Stretching a very small image makes it look blurry in the PDF, so use a file with enough original resolution. In VitaWrite's profile block you can upload JPG, PNG or WebP files and adjust the photo position.

Photo files are personal information too

Do not upload resumes or backup files that contain your photo to shared folders or public repositories. It is a good habit to clear out copies you no longer need once you have submitted.
