B2B Sales Manager career description example

In B2B sales, the career description is your track record in writing. Present each major account, deal or territory as a project with the sales cycle, your role in the deal team and the result in contract value, quota attainment or renewal rate. Name clients as 'Company A' and express amounts as ratios when contracts are confidential.

For: B2B sales professionals applying for account executive or sales manager roles

Three keys to a B2B Sales Manager career description

01

Treat key deals and accounts as projects

A line saying 'handled 40 enterprise clients' tells the reviewer little. Pick the deals, account expansions or territory launches that best show your skill, give each a period and a deal team, and describe the steps from first meeting to signed contract.

02

Use quota and pipeline numbers carefully

Quota attainment, win rate, pipeline created, average deal size and retention are the standard sales metrics. State the period and the base, such as '118% of annual quota in 2023', and use ratios or ranges when absolute contract values cannot be disclosed.

03

Protect client confidentiality

Enterprise contracts usually carry confidentiality terms. Refer to clients by industry and size, such as 'Company A, a mid-size manufacturer', and avoid exact prices. The reviewer is assessing how you sell, and careful handling of client data is itself a signal of trust.

Rewrite result lines like this

BeforeResponsible for managing major corporate accounts.

AfterManaged 18 enterprise accounts in the manufacturing sector, keeping annual renewal at 94% and expanding 5 accounts to additional modules.

Account count, sector, renewal rate and expansions show the size and quality of the book of business.

BeforeWe won a large contract with a well-known company.

AfterLed a 7-month deal cycle with Company A, a logistics firm, coordinating 2 solution engineers to close the team's largest contract of the year.

Anonymizing the client while stating cycle length and your coordinating role keeps the line confidential and specific.

BeforeConsistently achieved sales targets.

AfterReached 112%, 118% and 121% of annual quota in 3 consecutive years, ranking in the top 10% of 30 account executives.

'Consistently' becomes credible once each year's figure and a peer comparison are shown.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mention client names that are publicly known?

Only if the relationship is public, for example announced in a press release or case study. Otherwise use 'Company A' with the industry and size. When in doubt, anonymize; interviewers rarely need the name to judge the deal.

How do I show results if I missed quota one year?

You do not need to list every year. Focus on the deals and metrics that were strong, and if the interviewer asks, explain the context and what you changed. Avoid inventing or rounding up numbers, as they are easy to verify through references.

Should inside sales or pre-sales work be included?

Yes, if it relates to the role. Describe it with its own metrics, such as meetings booked, pipeline generated or proof-of-concept conversion, and be clear about which stage of the sales cycle you owned.
